The life of Saad Ibn Abi Waqqas R.A
Alhamdulillah, From time to time we talk about contemporary issues, in order to educate ourselves regarding that particular issue, but we do also talk about, the companions of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, in order to encourage ourselves. in order to motivate ourselves, because those are role models, right?
So today I decided to speak about one such companion, who was very close to the Prophet of Allah. He was dearly loved by Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he was amongst the 10, who were given the glad tidings of entering into Jannah in one gathering. He was 23 to 24 years younger than Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, yet, he was the uncle, the maternal uncle of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he is that companion, who was the last one to leave the world from amongst the 10 who are given glad tidings of entering into Jannah in one gathering, and this man is none other than Saad Ibn Abi Waqqas R.A.
Have you heard of this name before?
hazrat saad r.a? And who have you heard of this name before? You’ve heard? Mashallah, is there anyone with the name saad in this gathering? Does anyone have this name saad in this gathering?
No one, it means that especially the young people who just got married, if there is a child coming on the way, you better after listening to what I’m about to say for the next 15 minutes, you better name your child Saad, because he was a very amazing companion of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam.
Did you know that Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam upon one occasion, told the other companions that is there anyone of you?
Who has an uncle, like my uncle, Hazrat Saad R.a. And that is how much Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam loved him. And the way he accepted Islam is amazing.
You know, normally, us when we go to sleep, and when we see a dream, most of the time, it is our thoughts. It is our conversations. It is our emotions. It is our stress that we see in our dreams. So the next morning, we want to wake up, and we want to go and change the world, that I saw this in my dream. And this dream could mean this. So let me go and do this. Rather than changing ourselves. We want to start changing the world. What we need to understand about dreams is that whether it is a good dream, or a bad dream, if it is getting us closer to Allah subhanaw taala it is beneficial.
If it’s a good dream, it is getting you closer to Allah, it’s a good thing. If it’s a bad dream, it is getting you closer to Allah, it’s a good thing. That is what we should be worried about. Nevertheless. So Hazrat Saad R.a. We were talking about him how he accepted Islam. He goes to sleep. And he sees in his dream that he is drowning into darkness. And as he’s drowning into darkness, a moon came out and the light of the moon started illuminating the whole place. And under the light of the moon, there was Hazrat Abu Bakr Hazrat Ali Radi Allahu anhu and hazrat sayed r.a. So Hazrat Saad R.a mentioning the dream, he says that I tried getting closer to them.
But before I could get closer to them, I woke up, I wasn’t allowed. So when I woke up the next few hours, or the next few days, in the next few days, Hazrat Abu Bakr Radi Allahu anhu and who came to visit me, we all know about Hazrat Abu Bakr, he was a man who always liked spreading care and goodness, so that Abu Bakr came to meet Hazrat Saad. And he said to him, Hazrat Saad do you know that there is a man who says he is a prophet, and such and such and such a person has accepted Islam, even I have accepted Islam oh Saad you should also accept Islam.
So now Hazrat Saad R.a, who started recording the dream, because the name that Hazrat Abu Bakr r.a And who mentioned what the same names that he saw in his dream, there was hazrat ali, there was hazrat abu bakr.
So other Hazrat Saad R.a understood the message of the dream. And he told hazrat Abu Bakr, that take me to the Prophet of Allah, I want to accept Islam, and he goes to the Prophet of Allah the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was performing Asar salah, so when the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi salam was done with his Asar Salah and Hazrat Saad r.a and who accepted Islam at the hands of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
Now normally, that happens, even amongst ourselves, when a person has to accept Islam. Right when a person has to accept Islam, the first people to oppose him, are his own family members. Isn’t that what happens?
Like we have students we have some students coming in letting it our place. We listen to them, and they share their stories with us. When they accept Islam or when they revert the first people to oppose them are the first people to stand against against them or their own family members. They are not there to support.
When your own family members they are not there to support them. So even Hazrat Saad r.a when he accepted Islam, the first person to oppose him was his own mother. His mother said that oh Saad kill you don’t abandon the religion of Mohammed. I am not going to eat. She went on hunger strike. The first day holding she didn’t eat, she fainted.
The second day she didn’t eat, she fainted.
The third day Hazrat Saad r.a who goes to his mother, and he says to her that oh, my beloved mother, I love you. I love you very much. But I want you to understand that even if you have to die 100 times, I am not going to abandon the religion of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
So at that moment, Allah subhanaw taala revealed the verse
وَإِن جَاهَدَاكَ لِتُشْرِكَ بِي وَوَصَّيْنَا الْإِنسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ حُسْنًا
oh humankind, we are advising you to be good to be kind to your parents. But when جَاهَدَاكَ لِتُشْرِكَ بِي. But if they are forcing you, if they are inviting you towards the disobedience of Allah subhanho wa Taala
فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا then you don’t have to obey your parents in that matter.
Are you getting my point?
If they have to invite you towards the disobedience of Allah, then there is no obedience of parents, you know, when it comes to obedience, when you are obeying the creation of Allah subhanho wa Taala there is a limit, there is a boundary, but when you’re obeying Allah subhanhu wa Taala himself, there is no limit, there is no boundary.
Nevertheless, later on. Hazrat Saad r.a and who used to take pride with this verse was saying
وَوَصَّيْنَا الْإِنسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ حُسْنًا
And he used to tell the people that this verse was revealed because of me. So that is Hazrat Saad r.a.
Hazrat Saad r.a also happens to be that men who was the first one to shed blood for the sake of Allah subhanhu wa taala. In the initial stages when the Muslims accepted Islam few Muslims, the Command of Allah subhanhu wa Taala was to bear patient patience.
It wasn’t to retaliate, it wasn’t to take revenge. So at that time, few Sahaba got together, and they were performing Salah hiding from the mushrikeen, and the Mushrikeen decided to attack and Hazrat Saad r.a who broke his resolve, and he ended up hitting this one person with his bow and this men started bleeding.
So it comes in nations that have that solder the Allahu Taala and who is the first men who shed blood for the sake of Allah subhanhu wa Taala in the path of Allah subhanho wa Taala. Hazrat Saad r.a who participated in all the battles. He participated in Uhud, in badr name it something amazing happened in the Battle of Uhud, amazing incident, you know, in the Battle of Uhud a rumor spread that Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi salam has passed away and the the Sahaba got worried.
They got worried even Hazrat Saad got worried, and he took it upon himself that I am going to fight till the last moment of my life, even if Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has passed away.
But as he was fighting, he saw that there is a man’s standing and this man is being surrounded by some other people. And when he went close, he saw it was Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
So he also joined the same group in order to protect Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, as he was protect protecting Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself was giving him an arrow and it comes in narrations that he shot more than 1000 arrows in order to protect Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he was a very good Archer right he was a very good Archer.
So upon every arrow which Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu listen was given to Hazrat Saad r.a Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu wasallam was saying that Assad take the arrow and shoot
فداك ابي وأمي Oh saad take the arrow and shoot? Shoot the arrow May my father and mother be sacrificed for you?
Imagine this was the statement that the Companions used to utter for Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, but at this moment, Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself was uttering the statement Hazrat Saad R.a.
Hazrat Ali R.a Mentioned that I never saw Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam combining both the father and mother for anyone else other than Hazrat Saad r.a who there is our lucky, this companion of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa Salam is another Hazrat Saad r.a. And who himself mentioned that at that same moment, I saw two men in white clothing. I had never seen them before the Battle Uhud they were protecting Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and I never saw them after the Battle of uhud Who are these two men?
These were angels, Hazrat Saad r.a himself also has the honor of seeing the angels.
